Career Guidance

At Lakeland Learning, whether you are about to leave school and are struggling with your future career direction, are an adult who is returning to work after a break, or are looking to change career direction, we've got you covered.  We work with adults of all ages in the Taupo District, to help them to figure out what their next career move might be. This service is free for all students who are enrolled with us. If you aren't studying with us, check out the information below inclusions and pricing.

Please note that our career guidance service is supplementary to the education and training services we provide. Unlike our education and training services, this service is not accredited by NZQA.

What to expect

In order to make good career decisions, you must first understand yourself. If you are in a job that matches your interests, your work values, and your personality, you are far more likely to enjoy what you do. There is a lot of truth in the saying "find a job you love and you won't have to work another day in your life". Therefore, much of what we do is designed to help you to better understand yourself in relation to work, and to identify possible options that you can investigate further.

Unlike many other organisations offering career guidance, we will spend time getting to know you, face to face. There will be no telephone interviews with us!

Before our first meeting, we will ask you to complete an interests inventory designed to identify jobs that 'match' your interests. We will ask you to email this to us, so we can study the results BEFORE we meet face to face.

Next, we make a time to meet. This meeting will usually take around 2 hours. During this time, we will ask questions designed to assist you to gain a better understanding of yourself, and to reflect more on your knowledge and skills.

Next, we will ask you to complete Holland's Self-Directed Search. This is a tool which is used most frequently by career advisors, and will help you to learn more about yourself. The Self-Directed Search was developed on the premise that people can be loosely classified into six personality types, which can be used when exploring potential occupations. Your results will help you make career decisions.

Finally, we will take some time to consider how your work values match your potential job choices.

At the end of the meeting, we will set you some tasks that will require you to investigate the careers you are considering. This is an important part of the process, to ensure that you are on the right track.

Finally, we will have a follow-up meeting to review your findings and to make a plan of action.
